I've had variations of this image in my head since the mid nineties. While I was living in Atlanta I made some drawings that had parts of what I was trying to express but this effort gets closer than I have ever gotten before and I'm sure like many artist I will come back to this subject matter over and over again ... each time hopefully getting closer.
BANDAGED HEAD SELF PORTRAIT 2011

It is a very strong piece!

Yes it reminds me very much of a young John Wayne Gacy

Martha - I had no idea that Gacy did any painting until your post, so I went on the internet to see what they looked like. While I think the Gacy pieces are pretty dark in a creepy sort of way (with all the bright colors) and I agree that this piece is rather dark as well, I am sure that Gacy and I have different intentions in mind. The bandages for me represent the interrupted parts of my soul that could use further attention and healing. The sign over the figure addresses an earlier time in my life when I tried to cover up the pain with intoxicants. I hope these remarks make the work more accessible so when you see other pieces of mine, they won't remind you of such a prolific serial killer.
Be Well
