This photo was taken in the early spring of 2008. The building is in a neighborhood that is being gentrified and this sign will probably not survive the shift in who lives there so I took this picture to document the sign and the event. In some strange way the deterioration of the sign and building is right; exactly the way it should be.
About five years ago I started a series of drawings that I called body Parts Out of Context. My good friend Peter Vilbig owns one of the pieces that I completed from the series. This photograph is a return to exploring the societal perceptions that are being developed in our collective consciousness regarding how we relate to each others bodies and often time parts of bodies. Are we hard wired to address our attention to particular bodies parts or are the attractions a learned behavior whose origin lies in how we think about ourselves and our lives together?
Stevens Jay Carter is a Washington DC based artist that I have known for about fifteen years or so and someone I respect very much. The things that I have always been impressed with about Stevens are his commitment to his art and to fostering healthy relations with the people he meets along the way.
I took this picture during a conversation in his studio at 52 O Street NW. We talked about many things but most importantly we talked about what it means to be an artist; to be a person who must make things. The conversation was nourishing for me and I hope it was for Stevens too.
Each day in ways that are often difficult to recognize there is renewal. In the grave yard where I have been taking photographs every so often I find clusters of flowers that I assume have been left by loved ones of the deceased. I have no idea of the intent of those who have left the flowers but I imagine that they leave flowers to mark the beauty that's is still present ... a residual reminder of life of the deceased person whose bodily remains rest in the grave ....
And so the cycle continues .... neutral to our feelings and questions .... hopes and fears.
